In Beaufort in TY every student has the opportunity to get involved in the ‘Young St. Vincent De Paul Society’. This committee is one of the social justice committees within Beaufort and works tirelessly to raise awareness of poverty and raise vitally needed funds for the work SVP do.
It is facilitated by our School Chaplain, Ms. Conlon.
Social Justice is the concept that every individual, regardless of their age, race, religion, ethnicity or socioeconomic background, has access to equal opportunities.
The SVP Youth Development Programme provides a great opportunity for personal and social development whilst gaining an understanding of the ethos, mission and aims of SVP.
The programme enables students to develop projects that will improve the lives of others and gain a better understanding of Social Justice.
There are various roles within SVP:
- Vice Presidents
- Social Media Reps
- Class Representatives
The students are given opportunities to develop their social and personal skills by running for election for these roles. They highlight why they want a particular job to their peers and are interviewed by teachers and are then elected to roles of leadership within SVP.
Each year the SVP committee engage in a social action project.
This year in Beaufort our wonderful SVP committee raised almost €7000 for SVP.
They also threw a ‘Christmas Party’ for children in a vulnerable socio-economic background in where every child got a ‘Santa’ present and connected with their ‘big sister’ from LHS Beaufort.
The SVP committee is a very important part of society that highlights our ethos and values here in LHS Beaufort.
