1916 Commemorations

in News

2016 is a very important year for Irish history as it marks the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The History Department in Loreto Beaufort is encouraging all students to participate in the 1916 commemorations.

Each History class in the school will learn about and research a different theme associated with 1916. Themes include:

• Women of the 1916 Rising

• Children of the Rising

• Tenement life in 1916

• The signatories of the proclamation

• Padraig Pearse and St Endas

• The proclamation of the Irish Republic

• British forces in Dublin 1916

Proclamation Day, March 15th, 2016

On the 15th of March, Ms O’Neill and the senior history students, are organising a whole school assembly to commemorate the Easter Rising. We will remember all those who took part in the rising and those whose lives were affected by it. During the assembly the proclamation will be read out and a tricolour, presented to the school by the Thomas Meagher Foundation, will be raised.

All students are asked to learn the words to Children of ’16, a song written by Declan O’Rourke for the 1916 commemorations, as this will be sung during the assembly.

1916 Loreto Beaufort Connections

We would encourage all Beaufort students to get involved by researching their family history. Talk to your family and relatives about the 1916 Rising. You never know you might just uncover some exciting connections! Our very own Sr. Angela Powell IBVM, is Michael Collins grandniece. Collins fought in the GPO during Easter Week 1916 and went on to become a leading figure in the fight for Irish independence.

• Do you have a great grand-father who fought in the GPO alongside Padraig Pearse and James Connolly?

• Or perhaps your great grandmother was a member of Cumann na mban?

• Was a relative living in Dublin city centre at the time of the Rising?

• Do you have letters or other objects at home connected to the men and women who took part in the 1916 Rising?

If you discover a connection to the 1916 Rising, please email the details to Ms Murphy. We hope to make a display with each of the Beaufort connections we uncover.

Don’t forget that there are lots of state events taking place over Easter 2016. For further details please click on the link below:
