Ms. O’Donoghue opened our new gallery space today ‘Gallery 2′. Thank you to all the current 6th year art students and Ms. Kearney for the gorgeous bird paintings. Thank you to the current 2nd year art students and Ms. Bowe for their still life works and to Ms. Dunne for framing the work so well. They look fantastic. And thank you to our caretaking team on the new window. The stairwell is now a lovely bright and colourful space.

Senior Prefects 2010

Congratulations to all our incoming Senior Prefects. Ms O Donoghue and Mr Carolan presented our new school leaders to the school at assembly this week. Ms O Donoghue spoke about leadership and our new Head Girl and Deputy gave a wonderful and positive inaugural speech to the school community.

Peer Buddies 2010

Our Fifth Year Peer Buddies attended a training course during the week. Each Fifth Year Peer Buddy will help First Year students with their adventurous transition from primary school to secondary school. We look forward to hearing about all the exciting activities that our Peer Buddies have planned for our eager First Years.

Opening of our new fountain

Over the summer our caretaking team have been busy looking after and improving the grounds of Beaufort. Brendan designed and created a new fountain for the memorial garden using slate and granite. On Tuesday 31st August it was formally opened by Principal Ms. O’Donoghue.

Ms. Donoghue, our chaplain, blessed the fountain with Holy Water from Medjugorje and Ms. Walsh said a beautiful reading. All Senior Prefects were present and the sun came out for the ceremony.

Thank you to Brendan for creating this wonderful fountain for all of us to enjoy.

Welcome back to all our pupils

Welcome back to all our pupils!

I hope you had a great summer and come back to school rested and invigorated, ready for another school year. Four of the teaching staff retired at the beginning of the summer; Ms Cogan, Ms Campbell, Ms Hiney and Ms Monks and on behalf of the whole school community, I would like to wish them well in their retirement. They have each contributed so much to the school over many, many years that we will really miss their presence and wisdom. Now it is their time to enjoy free time and embark on new journeys.

Our Leaving Certificate class of 2010 received their results recently and they did brilliantly. Not one pupil failed a matriculating subject i.e. Irish, English, Maths or a foreign language. 35% of pupils achieved over 500 points, while 71% achieved over 400 points and in all 95% got over 300 points, well in excess of the national averages. They have made us, their families and themselves very proud indeed and we know they will get into the courses they want and go on to become great women.

Loreto Beaufort is a great school and has built up a real sense of community with a positive atmosphere. We try, in a Catholic context, to help each pupil develop herself in many ways. Our work depends on good relationships between our pupils, parents, staff and wider community. Mr Carolan is taking up his new role as Deputy Principal and together, we hope to lead the school, to build on this tradition and make further improvements into the next decade. I wish all in our school community a happy and fulfilled 2010/2011 academic year.

Retirement Mass

We had a beautiful Retirement Mass on Friday 14^th of May marking not only the end of the school year but also the end of long careers for three much valued teachers. Ms Cogan, Ms Campbell and Ms Hiney have all been at Beaufort since the 1970’s and the mass was a very moving and heartfelt expression of our appreciation for them and our best wishes for their future plans. Lovely tributes were made to them by Mr Frank Murray and by the 6^th years. The students presented them each with a beautiful engraved pen as a token of their appreciation. Well done to the Religion Department for organising such a wonderful ceremony and to Ms Cruise for all the lovely music and singing.

Eco UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards: Evening Herald 10/05/2010

Our 4th Year Eco UNESCO Team – Ailbhe Kelly, Sadhbh Hegarty, Roisin Pierce, Helen Sweeney and Mary Maedhbh Park, have won two awards: Best Art and Design, Best Club of the Year, at the Young Environmentalist Awards on the 12th of May in the Mansion House. Congratulations on your fantastic achievements girls.

The project they created and organised was a Greenhouse Gig Fashion Show. They made clothes out of recycled materials which represented issues affecting our environment.

Special thanks to all our models from Transition Year who helped us out so much. Thanks so much to Ms. O’Neill for all your support and Alannah Stritch who documented our actions as our own personal photographer on the day.

From The Eco UNESCO Peer Education Team

Ailbhe Kelly gives us an insight into the groups experiences of Eco Unesco:

We first heard about Eco UNESCO in September from Ms. O’Neill who received a letter inviting transition year students to join a course about Sustainable Development. Not exactly sure what to expect, myself and a few other girls from the year applied for a place in this twelve week program. Myself and four other girls; Sadhbh Hegarty, Mary Maedhbh Park, Helen Sweeney and Laura Guihen successfully completed the twelve week course. We went along on the Wednesday to the Greenhouse on Andrew St for our first group session, and we loved it!

Throughout the 12 week course we learnt a lot and participated in many action projects such as an environmental trip to Phoenix park, an Urban Safari and a wave protest.On the 5^thDecember Eco unesco participated in a public wave demonstration in the city centre near the Dáil to protest for a our say in the upcoming Copenhagen Conference. We also recently interviewed John Gormley in Leinster House with questions related to the Copenhagen Conference.

After attending the twelve week course we are now qualified peer educators and will begin facilitating group sessions for the new class on our own next month!

The Greenhouse Gig

We decided to hold an eco fashion show and concert in the Greenhouse which would promote issues of sustainable development to our peers. We hand-made all outfits out of recycled materials from old school socks to bottle caps! We also had a few bands playing at the gig along with the themed fashion show. The night was a huge success and we have been asked to perform our show again For the Young Environmentalist Awards in the Mansion House.
